Hypothesis

Personal trainers feel frustrated using multiple fitness applications to save fitness programs, client data and performance statistics. They need one tool that can help them keep all of this data in one place to save time when they create a fitness program for their clients.

Solution

If personal trainers can document and create a fitness program for their clients quickly, then they will retain clients and decrease their non-billable time because ultimately, a clear workout plan will help the fitness coaches client understand their workout routine.

Interviews

With our client’s target users being specific, our best choice was to go directly to individuals directly and begin interviewing in person or over the phone.

  • Trainers take many different routes to reach the same task but most are broken down into two main points of interaction.

    • Client Focused.

    • Calendar Focused.

Affinity Mapping

All information was gathered from these interviews to find the commonalities between the responses and define our scope. This was used at multiple points through out our development sprint to continue to gain insight into our users needs.

Competitive.JPG

Competitive Analysis

Took a deep dive look at the businesses that are the direct competitors in StrongKo’s intended field.

  • Even being a niche field, a few companies were already designing programs for this intended field, many had gaps and try to hit only small portions of clients.

Comparative Analysis

We derived most of our comparisons from the same companies of the competitive.

  • Keeping in line with other applications functionality will be crucial in ease of use,

  • Finding ways to accommodate both styles of common interactions will be crucial in building a client net.

  • Keeping StrongKo’s projected growth in mind, The input fields will be needed to gather the data intended to show metric data.

Wireframing

A low-fidelity wire frame was put together to decide on the hierarchy and basic layout of our design decisions.

  • Between different test phases we were able to quickly and simply adjust assets around to find the best solutions to address our users needs.

Usability Testing

The more that we were able to iterate, the more we were able to narrow our scope into information that was able to help us build a optimal prototype.

Key design decisions

Through our research, we found that there was a near even split in ways that trainers approach building fitness routines through applications which is a factor in which training apps are used. While keeping with minimal design and building for speed and convenience, we arrived at a layout which attempts to accommodate both.

Client Navigation

One portion of our users build fitness routines specifically focused on the client, to accommodate this interaction we arrived at client navigation bar on the left hand side of the screen.

  • Client search bar at the top to allow for searching for specific clients.

  • Easy access to the option to add new clients

  • Client browser with clients in alphabetical order on a scroll-able field

Client Information

While building a exercise or routine, we found that trainers design specifically for the client in mind, making adjustments tailored for them. To assist with the trainers we shift the currently selected client to the top of the client navigation bar and expand field underneath to show the clients information and notes field.

Calendar overview

The second way in which trainers approach building fitness routines is schedule based. to accommodate this half of trainers we have the initial landing page show a week long calendar highlighting the current date on the far left of the field. below each given date is the days schedule with clients name and time shown in time order. Each name is selectable to allow quicker access for trainers to clients.

Input Fields

Understanding that StrongKo’s intention for the future is to implement metrics and other measurable improvements, we calculated the minimum amount of information needed to obtain these numbers and focused on gathering this informaiton.

  • Weight, Set, Rep, Rest time, and Tempo are the specific measurements StrongKo is looking to gather in order to calculate 1 Rep Maximum, Time Under Tension, and Tonnage.

  • Name and Notes allowed for trainers to alter and specify technique and style.

  • Video/Pictures implemented to assist trainers with demonstrating techniques and style.

Deliverable

We used the insights from our research, contextual inquiries, and competitive/comparative analysis and to create a design solution that would increase speed and convenience for trainers in designing fitness programs.

Results & Reflections

Results:

Our clients are excited about the insight which we uncovered during our research. Whole Body Solution is currently in talks with a developer to begin constructing the application.

Next steps:

We would continue to conduct more usability tests and improve the product to benefit our users and Whole Body Solutions.
